January seems to be the longest month of the year. Maybe it’s because the sun doesn’t rise until after 7 am and it’s dark before 5…although I have noticed the past few days it is setting a little later each day. It’s also our coldest month. That’s why events like the Black Hills Stock Show are so important to us Northerners. Sure there’s basketball and hockey…but the Stock Show seems to bring life and warmth to this dark month. From the Button Busting to the Ranch Rodeo it’s a wonderful week of entertainment.
I love to see all the folks from out of town and even out of state come into our shop. Some of these folks from Faith, Pierre and Chamberlain as an example get here once a year and it’s great to see them. We are so happy the Cattle ranchers and agriculture in general has had a good year. They do well and we all do well!
Thank you Ron Jeffries and Central States Fair Folks and all those involved in the great Rodeos for bringing us warmth in January!
It’s early morning Christmas Eve. Cloudy and cold but almost perfect Christmas weather. We need snow falling or that!
If you stop down today — we are here till 3 pm, you will see all of us in cute Christmas aprons and Antlers! We also have some great deals going right now. Penny is busy making bows as we speak for the last might Christmas baskets we are doing. We make our own bows and every basket/box etc. is different from the other one.

Were you there? If you were, thank you so much for participating in the 7th annual KOTA Care and Share Food Drive Bagel in the Street. It was another great success. Over $7300 dollars and over1000 pounds of food was raised to feed the hungry in our area. We had such great fun last Friday, November 12th from 6;30 to 9:00 a.m. In front of the KOTA studios we handed out nearly 2000 White Chocolate Chip Bagels, over 60 gallons of great tasting hot Dark Canyon Coffee and case afte case of Pepsi products. Helene Duhame, Mike Modrick, Alicia Garcia, Eric Gardener, Marnie Cook and other KOTA staff like Barb Inman, Margaret Bader, Pam Johnson, Judy Vidal, and ofcourse the wonderful staff at Black Hills Food Bank, Church Response and the Cornerstone Rescue Mission. The Mayor, Alan Hanks, Fire Chief, Mike Maltaverne as well as Darrell Shoemaker from Senator Johnsons office and Sandy Massey from Senator Thunes office were there— and a whole lot of others!!!!
We had great fun. We thought the line went very smoothly — what did you think. Anything you would like to see us do better for next year. Thank you again for participating.

This has been one of the most beautiful Falls I can remember here in the Black Hills. We have not had a killing frost at our house yet! Unlike this time last year. Our Winter started in October and didn’t end until about June 1st. Or so it seemed. Friday, October 15th a great group of about 20 volunteers decorated Wilson Park for the Holidays. I know it sounds crazy to put up Christmas lights in october but it’s really a perfect time. Once November hits the weather can be very dicey and people are so involved with all the Holiday stuff it’s hard to get volunteers. Meteorlogist Mike Modrick looked into his meteorological Crystal Ball and about two weeks ago gave us a heads up on the most probable best times to decorate. It was perfect!!!! We hope you will join us November 23rd, tuesday before Thanksgiving for the Lighting Ceremony. Our second annual. We’ll keep you posted. It’s amazing what can be done just by people doing — not waiting for government to do it or even pay for it!!! Big thanks fo volunteers and all the businesses up and down Mt. Rushmore Road and Black Hills Power and Light for purchasing lights, power and ACTION!!!! I would love to hear your thoughts.

It has been nearly 6 weeks since Black Hills Bagels Express o opened its doors – or should I say drive-thru. I am still amazed how we were able to get an espresso machine, coffee brewer, horizontal conveyertoaster, microwave, under counter fridge, 5 cubic foot chest freezer, two sandwich coolers, pepsi fridge, ice machine, three-hole sink, hand sink, bagel wire baskets, pos and whatever else including a huge handicap accessable restroom in a space that is 12 feet wide and 20 feet long!!!! We have just about everything the “Big Boys” have including a lit menu board with graphics and ordering window. We don’t have the neat digital head set yet but hopefully that’s coming. What do you think of our signs. Rossenbaum installed them. eventually we would like to have our cowboy bagel lit in neon…you know the “Neon Cowboy” look. What we really need however is YOU! Please drive thru – we’re open seven days a week. Monday through Friday 6:30 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm. You can get a great Latte using Dark Canyon Espresso (Roasted in Rapid City but becoming known throughout the country), and a great tasting, fresh baked bagel that we bring from our shop at 913 Mt. Rushmore Road. We have specials and save your ticket–there are some fun freebies! Hope to visit us soon.

Last week I and three other Master Gardeners, including my friend, Pam hansen (she just finished the course) treked behind Mount Rushmore in search of the not so illusive Mountain Pine Beetle. The devestation this ugly black beetle causes can be seen all around the Black Hills. On top of Harney Peak, the Black Elk Wilderness and it’s now affecting the National Memorial — Mount Rushmore. Dr. John Ball a professor at South Dakota State University literally travels the world helping communities and countries figure out what’s bugging their trees! Or what’s killing them or what the best tree for planting would be. A brilliant man! Anyway he led the rest of us through mostly lush, untravelled areas behind the monument looking for this nasty bug which kills Ponderosa Pine trees –absolutely. There is not turning back once this beetle drills through the bark, mates and lays about 75 eggs that overwinter and grow and eat inside the tree. I will be doing an “In The Garden” segment Tuesday on KOTA TV at 5:30 on this bug. hope you tune in…blog me with questions, hopefully I have some answers. If you have Ponderosa Pines — you need to watch this story.

For a few thousand young people in the Black Hills, this is graduation day. Last night Jack and I attended a graduation party for two young men who will be walking in cap and gown today. What a journey they have had. One black and the other native american –one from reservation life in South Dakota. The other from street live in Los Angeles. Both have been fortunate enough to be placed with one of the most loving and caring couples we know. One of the young men was adopted by this couple a few years ago. It’s such a great story but too long to share here. The important thing is they made it!!!! They are getting their diploma and a while new and wonderful world is about to open up to them. One of them is already thinking about getting into law enforcement! It’s also graduation day for another wonderful young man — Ryan Hirsch. Ryan was fortunate enough to be born into a loving, hard working family – but his journey to this day has been equally remarkable. Ryan is not only a hard working student, involved in band and other activities, he has a great outlook on life . Ryan will also no doubt make great contributions as he goes through life. Wow…what doors will these young men pass through over the next 60 years!!!!!!
Congratulations to all our graduates in the Black Hills — you’ve learned and accomplished a lot but there is more to learn and a lot more to accomplish.

Okay…maybe not great – but we have not had many beautiful weekends yet this year ! Nearly everyone who has come in this morning has been in a good mood – I think in large part because of the weather. It has also been a travelling weekend. Right away this morning we had visitors from Texas, Florida, Chicago and Newcastle!!!!! Saturday we had a family from Sacramento who wants to move here when he retires. He thanked us for our hospitality and said everyone in South Dakota has made he and his family feel welcome. Why am I never surprised to hear comments like that???? Because as a fourth generation South Dakotan I know we’re a gracious, giving bunch of folks! It’s nearly 2 and we’ll be closing shop at 3 and I hope to enjoy some of our great outdoors today too!!!!
By the way, I hope you have a lot of Great Sundays this year!!!!
